American Youth Soccer Organization. Founded
in California in 1964. Based upon
five basic principles: Everyone plays; Balanced Teams; Open Registration; Good
Sportsmanship; and Positive Coaching. Today there are over 650,000 players
and 50,000 teams nationally.
AYSO is an all-volunteer organization. Volunteering in
some way, big or small, will only enhance the positive experience your child can
have.
First of all, one of AYSO's philosophies is to provide balanced
teams. A team that has played together before and has had the same coach
would begin with an unfair advantage and therefore not be balanced. Also,
changing coaches and players is not a bad thing. New friends can
be made and more positive experiences can be had. Third, your coach may not be
in the same division this year as your child. Either your child has moved
up or the coaches child may have moved up and your child remained in the same
age division.
We definitely try to keep siblings in the same division on the same
team for the benefit of their parents, however aside from that, the concept of
balancing our teams may or may not allow "friends" to be on the same
team. Again, the opportunity to make new friends is there.
Registration
pays for a uniform consisting of jersey, shorts and socks, soccer accident
insurance, and a photo package. A
portion of your registration fee goes to the national program and the remainder
is used for region expenses such as goals, paint for the fields, first goal
pins, newsletters and volunteer training.
We do not give volume discounts to families.
We have a limited number of partial scholarships available for
families in financial need. Please ask the regional commissioner about
this program.
Games will begin on August 25th and end on October 27th.
Practices may not start until after August 1st.
The times are up to the coach.
Practices are usually held in the late afternoons during the week or on
weekends. And, the duration of practices per division are set in
the regional guidelines.
The days are up to the coach.
Again, the amount of practices per week per division are set in the
regional guidelines.
Practices
in the Makakilo / Kapolei area are held at Kapolei Regional Park.
Practices in the Waianae area are held at Waianae Gym or Waianae
Intermediate.
Games
for age groups U5, U6, U8, U10 and U12 are all at Kapolei Regional Park.
Games for U14, U16 and U19 are held at Kapolei Regional Park and other
field locations throughout Oahu.
Games usually begin at 8:00am and
the last game can begin as late as 3:00pm.
We are working on
forming the teams now and we hope to be able to share this information
with the children and their parents in June.
By mid July coaches will receive player rosters and may begin notifying team
members. Practice may not begin
before August 1.
It is up to each coach to contact
all the players and their parents on their team. Due to the
coach's schedule, vacation, etc, you may hear from the coach as late as
some time in August. If this happens, you may contact the region
hotline at 696-8889.
To be ready for practice and for the
games, you will need to have shoes either soccer or tennis shoes
(baseball and football cleats are NOT allowed), shin guards, practice
socks, an appropriate size ball (per your division), and a water bottle.
Our region consists of Leeward communities
from Iroquois Point to Makaha. 269 is the number given to our
region to identify us from all of the other regions nationally.
Referees, like all other participants, such as coaches and
administrators, are volunteers.
Yes! We
have a number of youth referees. If
your child is 10 or older we encourage them to take one of our referee classes
and help referee games.
Uniforms
usually arrive in August and are distributed to coaches, who then distribute
them to the team prior to our Opening Day.
Late registration may result in uniforms arriving late, but every effort
is made to get uniforms to the teams prior to the first game.
No, AYSO has asked
that no identifying marks/logos be put on the jersey that is provided to
each child.
To "play up" means to play in an age division over what one's age calls for. And, our region does not
allow such a practice.
Very
Important Player. This is a special
program for disadvantaged or challenged youth.
If you know of any VIP youth please contact our VIP coordinator for more
information.
First goal pins are
awarded to those children who score their first goals ever. These
pins are distributed at the end of the season to the coaches.
